Have You Seen Drum Recently?

Have You Seen Drum Recently? (1988)
Colour, 77 mins
Director: Jürgen Schadeberg (b.1931)

In the 1950s, DRUM magazine became the most widely read magazine in Africa. With its articles on crime, politics, sport and the township jazz scene, DRUM was the first African magazine to focus on contemporary urban black life. Photography was an especially important component in the magazine’s success. In this documentary, Drum’s Chief Photographer Jürgen Schadeberg brings together rare archival footage with photographs sourced from the DRUM archives to tell the story of the magazine and document its contribution to the cultural and political life of South Africa. Vibrating with original fifties music, the film captures the vitality and spirit of black South African life whilst addressing the difficulties of living under apartheid.

Price is £3.50 (on the door).
